We spoke with Colorado native, Ellie Weiler, about her part in the film, going to premieres, and why you should go see SNO-CIETY

Although it’s been unseasonably warm lately here in Boulder, there’s no doubt that we skiers and snowboarders are waiting for those first flakes to fall and for Eldora to open (come on already!) If we can’t get the stoke up just yet on the mountains, at least we can get that excitement going for some ski films, like this year’s Warren Miller film, SNO-CIETY.
Starting Thursday, November 13th, the film is showing at Boulder Theater with a variety of showtimes for that weekend.
You’ll still get the pow shots and big mountain panoramas like all ski films, but SNO-CIETY also dives into a very important part of ski culture: your crew. The film highlights tight-knit communities, shared rituals, and finding your place in mountain life.

We had the chance to speak with Ellie Weiler, professional snowboarder and Colorado-native, about her part in the film — competing in the all-women’s Research & Development competition at Whitewater Mountain Resort in British Columbia, Canada, a qualifying event for the Natural Selection Tour. See her this season in person at X Games 2026 in Aspen this January and potentially in a royal competition in Jackson Hole in February.

What was your part in SNO-CIETY?
So, I was lucky enough to be invited to the all-women Research & Development competition. You get broken into different groups, and each group has a leader who’s a legend in the snowboard world. I was lucky enough to be paired with Marie France Roy. Katie Kennedy and Sarka Pancochova were also there; just true legends in the sport. I mean, just being around them… It’s like osmosis. I tried to soak up as much as I could from them; it was my first time there, and I was kind of the newbie.
And I’m definitely biased, but I really like our part of the film!
And this is your first part in a Warren Miller film?
Yes. And I mean, it’s wild. Surreal. I can remember my aunt and uncle getting me and my younger brother a box set of Warren Miller films for Christmas one year, and it’s probably still in my parents’ basement.
At the premieres, you see like little kids — like we were — and they just have stars in their eyes, because it’s Warren Miller, and it’s such a legacy. So, it’s really fun to go see the movie and also interact with everybody at different premieres.
How did your part at R&D relate to SNO-CIETY’s highlight of community?
I’m competing against everyone at R&D, but while you’re actually in it, it doesn’t feel like that because everybody’s just rooting for everybody else and is hoping that we all do well. It’s just really fun — it’s still a competitive environment, for sure, but it’s not as competitive as, say, a team sport where your team is gonna do everything they can to make sure the other team loses.
At least with snowboarding, you’re doing as good as you can, and you all want your best to stack up against other people’s best. No one’s rooting for the other person to fall ever, so it’s really nice that way.
Lastly, what was your home mountain growing up here in Colorado?
Copper! But I’m in Salt Lake right now, which is my homebase for the season.
