Metropolitan Opera star Heidi Melton joins the Phil for Strauss’s meditations on life—his serenely beautiful Four Last Songs. Shostakovich’s Tenth is a tribute to artistic perseverance under Stalinism (complete with the composer’s signature “motto theme,” DSCH) and Malek Jandali’s Phoenix in Exile commemorates the fortitude and defiance of Syrian refugees.
